PickASlot

PickASlot is a smart parking finder app designed to save time and reduce the stress for drivers. It helps users find, schedule, and pay for parking spots based on their vehicle type-eliminating the hassle of searching for a space in busy areas.

How it started?

Finding a parking spot in crowded urban areas was always a challenge. I often spent several minutes driving in circles, wasting time and fuel. This frustration led me to conceptualize PickASlot, a personal project aimed at simplifying parking through real-time availability, pre-booking, and seamless digital payment.

Discover

In the Discover phase, the goal was to understand user behavior, pain points, and motivations around finding parking spaces. Through user interview and observation, we discovered that users like Anvin often face stress and time loss due to the unavailability of parking slots and lack of real-time updates.

The empathy map helped visualize what users say, think, do and feel-revealing frustrations such as uncertainty, waiting and poor navigation. These insights guided the definition of user needs and opportunities to design a more efficient, user-friendly parking slot booking experience.

Problem Statement

Finding parking in crowded cities is time consuming and stressful.

People often:

  • Spend 10-20 minutes searching for available parking.

  • Park far from their intended destination.

  • Face uncertainty about parking availability.

  • Experience wasted fuel, time, and stress.

Goal 

Design a digital solution that allows users to quickly find, reserve and pay for parking spots suited for their vehicle type-eliminating waiting and hassle.

Ideation & Brainstorming

During the ideation and brainstorming phase, the goal was to simplify the parking experience for users. I explored ways to make finding and booking a spot faster and more intuitive by integrating features like real-time availability, advance slot booking, vehicle-type selection and secure digital payments-all aimed at reducing stress and saving time.

Solution

PickASlot is a mobile app that enables users to:

  • Find nearby parking spots instantly

  • Schedule parking in advance or search for immediate availability.

  • Select parking based on vehicle type.

  • Pay digitally to secure a spot and avoid waiting.

  • Navigate easily to the reserves spot using in-app directions.

​

This app reduces the hassle of parking, saves time, and enhance urban mobility for drivers.

Sketches & Wireframes

After finalizing insights from ideation phase, initial sketches were created to visualize the core user flow.

​

To refine the ideas, low-fidelity wireframes were developed, focusing on simplicity, clear navigation, and minimal user effort. The wireframes outlined essential interactions such as:

  • Selecting a parking slot from map view

  • Viewing slot details and availability status

  • Confirming booking

User Testing

To evaluate the usability of the parking spot booking interface, moderated user testing sessions were conducted.

  • Access the ease of booking a parking slot

  • Observe user interaction with slot selection and confirmation.

  • Identify confusion points in navigation or icon understanding.

  • User found the interface clean and responsive

  • Slot status icons need clearer color distinction

  • Confirmation feedback was appreciated for clarity

  • Suggested adding a cancel booking shortcut on the home screen

​Outcome

Average task success rate: 90%

Overall feedback indicated that PickASlot is intuitive and practical, with minor improvements needed for visual cues and task shortcuts.
